Horses have been an integral part of our family for the seven generations we have lived on this farm. Col. Richard H. Dulany, Nat’s great-great grandfather, was a revered cavalry officer who founded both the oldest foxhunt (Piedmont) and the oldest Colt-and-Horse show (Upperville) in the United States. His father purchased the property in 1830, and it has been a working farm ever since. Welbourne has remained a flagship estate in the drive for sustainable land use, historic easement, and historic preservation ever since. As such, the property has been preserved forever through both through land easements and a recent sale of all future development rights.
